Average velocity is similar to the average speed, but we know that Velocity is a vector quantity which has direction and speed is a scalar quantity which does not has direction. So that the total distance used in average speed will be total displacement in the average speed.

We can say that the average velocity is displacement over total time.

                   Average velocity = displacement/Total time
                   V(av) = Δd/Δt

                   V(av) = (df – di)/(tf – ti)

          Δd = change in distance

          Δt = change in time

          df = final distance

          di = initial distance

          tf = final time

          ti = initial time

The S.I unit of average velocity is same as velocity, which is m/s.

Example: Calculate the average velocity at a particular time interval of a particle if it is moves 10 m at 4 s and 30 m at 8s along x-axis?

Solution: Given that,
          Initial position = 10 m
          Final position = 30 m
          Initial time = 4 sec
          Final time = 8 sec
          Average velocity = (30 – 10)/(8 – 4)
                                      = 20/4 = 5 m/s.

Example: A train is moving with initial velocity of 150 m/s and it reaches its destiny at 250 m/s. Calculate its average velocity.

Solution: Given
          Initial velocity= Vi = 150 m/s
          Final velocity = Vf = 250 m/s
V(av) = (Vi + Vf)/2
          = (150 + 250)/2 = 400/2 = 200 m/s.
